Best of the Best Designers Speak® - Video - Storybox

The Best Design Awards are a major feature of the local design calendar and some of last year's winners have toured the country to offer first-hand insights into their projects.

The 2021 series was recorded on video. Here is one from the series of twenty recorded.

Mana Moana Digital Ocean
Robert Appierdo

Between 2012-18 Wellington’s Lux Light Festival boasted a water screen (content projected onto a mist curtain) off of Wellington Harbour’s lagoon. The screen was often populated with haphazard content that, according to Robert, was never quite used to its best potential. In 2018 as it was petering out, two artists - Michael Bridgman and Rachael Rakena - came to Robert to see it and suggested that they could take it over. So they did.

The result has been award-winning artistic collaborations between 20 to 25 senior Pasifika and Māori artists (writers, choreographers, musicians, designers, etc) emphasising narratives and identities across the Pacific and Oceania.  It has become an ephemeral space that visually and metaphorically connects people across this huge body of ocean that connects the islands.
