Best of the Best Designers Speak® - Video - LandLAB

The Best Design Awards are a major feature of the local design calendar and some of last year's winners have toured the country to offer first-hand insights into their projects.

The 2021 series was recorded on video. Here is one from the series of twenty recorded.

Commercial Bay Sculptural Seat
Ethan Reid
LandLAB

To create seating in a podium, rooftop garden in the newly completed Commercial Bay tower, LandLAB took most of their inspiration from their surroundings.

According to landscape architect Ethan Reid, LandLAB’s emphasis on this project came from the fact that the client (Precinct Property) placed very high value in public spaces and expected work to match that.

The team looked into the history and topography of the land beneath the garden for inspiration and, according to the designer, also studied the nearby island formations that can be seen from such a high vantage point.

This led to concept plans for a family of three outdoor benches with an expressive and highly sculptural contour that sought to bring variety and generosity to this outdoor space.

The five year project made use of computer modelling and is, according to this presentation, an attempt at using parametric design to come up with applications for public space. The harbour inspired benches were manufactured in pieces, as if sliced from timber. The timber itself was a TimberLab glue laminated material and significant attention was paid to how it would weather and age and its relationship with nearby plants.
