To The Floor 2023 - Well-Being

The Global Well-being Institute defines well-being as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.

‘Well-being is not a passive or active state but rather an “active pursuit” that is associated with intentions, choices and actions as we work toward an optimal state of health and wellbeing. Well-being is linked to holistic health—that is, it extends beyond physical health and incorporates many different dimensions that should work in harmony.

Wellbeing is significantly influenced by the physical, social and cultural environments in which we live’.

Wellbeing can be reflected through, but not confined to:

Physical: Nourishing a healthy body through exercise, nutrition, sleep, etc.

Mental: Engaging the world through learning, problem-solving, creativity, etc.

Emotional/Empathy: Being aware of, accepting and expressing our feelings, and understanding the feelings of others.

Spiritual: Searching for meaning and higher purpose in human existence.

Social: Connecting and engaging with others and our communities in meaningful ways.

Environmental: Fostering positive interrelationships between planetary health and human actions, choices and wellbeing.

What makes you feel good, what is well-being to you, where would you find your expression for well-being.

Wellness is a sensory experience, improving the human experience through interaction with the environment and space. It can be emotive, a connection, comfort, contentment, happiness, health, prosperity, safety, peacefulness, homeliness.

In this competition To The Floor – Well-being, we are looking for designs that embrace a blend of positive interconnectedness that enriches people’s lives physically, psychologically, socially, and ecologically.

To The Floor – Well-being provides the opportunity for you to create a design inspired by how well-being feels for you.

From all design inspirations entered, Milliken will work with the winner on developing flooring carpet tiles that will be used to enhance well-being in spaces. Flooring is an element that anchors the other design elements and provides the connection and experience for the occupants’ sense of well-being as immersive and inclusive.

Now more than ever wellness and well-being are intricately connected to the spaces we occupy and how they make us feel.

Commercial spaces are increasingly taking cues from residential interiors to create connectivity and comfort for an inviting and productive atmosphere.

“Wellness is the complete integration of body, mind and spirit.  The realisation that everything we do, think, feel and believe has an effect on our wellbeing”  Greg Anderson

Development Process for the Winning Design:

The collaboration will commence with DINZ coordinating an introduction between Milliken and the winner. This will allow Milliken to meet the winner and gain an understanding of their creative narrative and the development of their design concept.

It will also provide an opportunity for Milliken to gain valuable insights on how the winner’s concept can be utilised to develop the commercial collection with true authenticity based on their design and the competitions’ theme.

The winner will have the opportunity to visit Milliken’s creative studio and manufacturing facility in Sydney and meet the team. They will be introduced to Milliken’s design, print and manufacturing capabilities and it will be the start of the collaboration process of developing patterns and suitable colour palettes to achieve a mutual commercial outcome. Every step of the design process, both the winner and the Milliken design team will be in constant communication and discussions working towards the final collection piece. This includes developing carpet samples at appropriate times for feedback and evaluation from the winner.
